Popular Local Attractions
Tamworth has a wealth of attractions some of which include:
- Wineries some of which are the Banalasta (along the New England Hwy) the Kitty Crawford Estate situated in the Dungowan Valley, the Lazy Poet Vineyard at Piallamore & the Tangaratta Vineyards in the Peel Valley.
- Tamworth boasts two Golf Courses, from the tree-lined narrow fairways at the Tamworth Golf Club to the deep fairway bunkers at the Longyard Golf Club.
- Bicentennial Park established in 1988 to commemorate the Bicentenary; provides passive recreation, parkland, fountain, several lakes, friendly wildlife (ducks & birds) granite historical facts and animal carvings and houses the Australian Light Horse Memorial Sculpture.
- Anzac Park easily found on Brisbane Street above the railway line with parkland, kids playground and features the Sandakin Memorial & Anzac gates.
- Regional Gallery Peel Street and Weswal Gallery Brisbane Street.
- The Oxley Lookout which has panoramic views of the city of Tamworth and the Peel River Valley, perfect to view the city lights at night.
- Tamworth Miniature Railway Located at the top end of Piper Street and is fun for all ages to ride a variety of Miniature Trains.
- The Tamworth Regional Botanic Gardens This 28 hectare site is located at the top end of Piper Street and displays the flora of the region and other parts of Australia as well as plants of the world.
- Tamworth Power Station Museum tells the story of the City’s role in the development of electric street lighting from oil lamps to gas, through to the installation of the first electric street lights. The museum has one of the largest collections of early 20th century electrical appliances.
- Walking & Cycling Tracks Many of Tamworth’s walking & cycling paths make their way along the scenic Peel River foreshore. Kamilaroi Track winds its way through the Oxley Park linking the Marsupial Park, Oxley Lookout & Flagstaff Mountain over a distance of several kilometers. Peel River Levee Bank follows the top of the levee banks from Scott Road in the south to Jewry Street in the north. This is a lovely picturesque path that starts from our Tourist Information Centre (next door to Paradise Tourist Park) and can lead you into Bicentennial Park, and the city centre.
- Country Music Attractions Tamworth welcomes visitors each January to its internationally acclaimed and world renowned Country Music Festival (one of the largest of its kind in the world). On a smaller scale JULY sees the Hats Off to Country Music Festival (a weekend Festival showcasing Country Music).
- Some of the main attractions in town include: The Big Golden Guitar, Australian Country Music Foundation Museum located on Brisbane Street and one of the city's main Country Music attractions - Walk a Country Mile located in the guitar-shaped Information Centre. This museum allows you to experience the story of Australian Country Music in a unique and interactive environment. Hands of Fame located in the Park, on the corner of Brisbane Street & Kable Avenue.
- Calala Cottage Museum Tamworth’s first residence, includes the Shepherds Hut slab building which is the city’s oldest surviving building. The beehive school which contains interesting educational items, the Dalyville building which displays early telephone, photographic equipment & household items, a blacksmiths shop & coach house.
- Powerhouse Motorcycle Museum Houses more than 50 restored motorcycles from the 1950’s to 1980’s.
